What Is A Fuse? And How To Test It

!±8± What Is A Fuse? And How To Test It

A fuse is a very thin wire, which either melts or vaporizes when too much current flows through it. The thin wire may be made of aluminum, tin-coated copper or nickel. The resulting open in the circuit stops current flow. In electronic equipment, most fuses are cylindrical glass or ceramic type with a metal cap at each end! The current rating also can be seen in one of the two metal end caps. There are two popular physical sizes: 1 - ¼ X ¼ - inch and 5X20mm. The 1 - ¼ X ¼ - inch size is used in many automobiles. You'll find both sizes in many electronic equipment, but the smaller 5 X 20mm has become more common. Fuses are available with current ratings from 1/500 Ampere to hundreds of amperes.

Purpose of Fuses

The purpose of a fuse is to open an electronic circuit when current flow exceeds a certain amount, determined by the rating of the fuse. Opening a circuit under high current conditions can save electronic components from damaged and prevents overheating, which could cause a fire.

Types of Fuses

There is two basic types of fuses: fast acting and slow blow. The fast acting type will open very quickly when their particular current rating is exceeded. This is important for analog meter movements, which can quickly be destroyed when too much current flows through them, for even a very small amount of time. Slow blow fuse have a coiled construction inside. They are designed to open only on a continued overload, such as a short circuit. The purpose of coiled construction is to prevent the fuse from blowing on just a temporary current surge.

Do not use a slow blow fuse in place of a fast acting fuse. It may not open fast enough to prevent components damage under a high current condition. It's not harmful to replace a slow blow fuse with a fast-acting fuse, but it will probably open up unnecessarily every now and then when the equipment is first switch on. A blown fuse can tell you something about your service problem. Often the glass case of the fuse appears clear, and you can still see the broken pieces of the fuse element. This means you have the kind of problem that causes a slow, gradual overload on the power supply. Some fuses even die of old age. But if the inside of the glass fuse is discolored, and there is no trace of the fuse element (the center connector), you know that the center connector was destroyed quickly and violently, using a lot of heat. The fault was a short circuit or other problem that caused a lot of current to flow very quickly.

Is some cases a fuse will open up fast enough when there is a surge so that other components aren't damaged. If this is the case, replacing the fuse with one of the same type and rating restores operation. Unfortunately, a high probability exists that if a fuse blew, something in the circuit it was protecting shorted out. In this case, a replacement fuse blows right away. The blown fuse can easily be replaced by a new one, after the overload has been eliminated when come into replacement. Use only the same current and voltage ratings as the original. The common type and current rating of a fuse in a monitor are slow blow 2A to 5A. When you buy replacement fuses, get several - you can easily use all of them while you're troubleshooting an elusive problem.

Testing Fuses

Turn the power off and remove the fuse from the circuit to check with a multimeter set to the lowest ohms range. Connect the probes to both end of the fuse. You may check the fuse while it still in circuit. A good fuse should showed continuity or read 0 ohm. A blown fuse is open which reads infinity on the meter.

Method and Types of Lighting For Locomotives

!±8± Method and Types of Lighting For Locomotives

In a previous article I covered the use of LEDs as the best type of lighting for locomotives. In this article I am going to go over other types of lighting that are excellent depending on the size of the head lights and tail lights of a locomotive and tender.

The LED is still the best form of lighting and will eventually take the place of Incandescent and Fluorescent lights for all lighting usage.

At the present some engines light fixtures are too small to handle an LED. A good example is the 0-6-0 switch engine. In general the light fixture for the headlight does not have the room or capacity to handle an LED. To compensate the problem it is suggested that the modeler use a 1.5V 30mA 1.2 Dia. Incandescent Lamp - Clear with a 560-Ohm Resistor ½ Watt, 5% Tolerance. The alternative is to use either a 12 or 14 Volt 30mA 1.7mm Dia. Incandescent Lamp - Clear.

Another way to install lighting in steam locomotives is to do the following. Using fiber optics as the medium for transmitting light from a light source to the intended light fixture reduces the size needed for the light fixture and allows for a smaller hole to be drilled into the light fixture.

By installing an LED inside of the engine and the tender and then running a fiber optic into the light fixture will give you the light desired. The installation of the LED should include a cylindrical cover such as heat shrinkable tubing set around the LED. The tubing should be approximately 1/8 of an inch from the face of the LED to the end of the tubing. You will have to determine how long the tubing should be to keep it fastened to the LED. (1/8" plus length) Insert the fiber optic in the tubing placing the fiber optic against the face of the LED. Glue, with clear plastic glue, the fiber optic in place at the entrance to the heat shrinkable tubing. Tape the LED assembly to the inside of the smoke box or at the inside back end of the tender.

Leave yourself enough length of fiber optic to run the fiber optic through the smoke box wall or tender wall and into the light fixture. Make sure the fiber optic barely if any extends beyond the back of the light fixture. Glue it in place using metal/plastic clear glue. It is recommended that you place a small drop of glue at the back of the light fixture once the fiber optic is in place. Make sure that you install a lens on the light fixture once the fiber optic is glued in place.

Metal Roof Installation Tips For DIY Metal Roofing

!±8± Metal Roof Installation Tips For DIY Metal Roofing

There are many advantages to installing a metal roof yourself. The most important is the cost of installing a metal roof. You can save thousands of dollars on a quality roof if you do it yourself.

Quotes from a contractor for a metal roof will often be very near the same as a shingle roof. But if you buy your material from a manufacturer on line, you should find considerable savings. Add to that the time saved in not tearing up old shingles, and the savings really add up.

The first step to a do-it-yourself metal roof installation is planning. You will need to measure all individual sections of your roof. Metal roof panels can be ordered in whatever length you need. When you have completed this step you can contact the manufacturer and compare prices and styles. Take advantage of personal contacts available to make sure you know all the parts you may need. But do not order yet.

Your next step should be to read the code requirements for your area for residential metal roofing applications. A copy of your local Building Code should be available at your local library or online. The measurements for screw placement will be there. Find it. Most communities will allow you to lay a metal roof on top of an existing shingle roof. Make sure your area is one of them. If your roof has a slope of 12 to 2 or less, you may need to use a butyl rubber tape at panel overlaps.

The importance of knowing exactly what you need to meet code requirements can not be over emphasized. The last thing you want to do is pull off the metal roof you just installed because you missed something your community thinks is important.

After you feel comfortable meeting your code requirements, plan where you are going to store materials. 'Delivery' will mean dropping your materials off a flatbed semi-trailer. If you want them someplace the delivery person can't drive to, you will have to move them yourself. Also consider access to your roof when planning storage.

You should get your roofing permit before you order your materials, just in case. A permit should last for 6 months to a year, and can be extended in most cases, so you should have plenty of time. If you know permitting won't be problem, order your materials.

You have already checked out manufacturer, styles and colors, so let's discuss tools. You will need a powerful drill. Small battery operated drills may not do the job. A 14 volt drill should be powerful enough, but make sure you have at least one spare battery charging at all times. If you choose to use a corded drill, you must consider protecting your extension cord from any sharp edges. Metal roofing can cut a cord in half, or strip insulation, causing dangerous shorts.

The same caution goes for your hands. Always wear leather gloves when handling metal roofing panels.

You will need something to cut metal panels for any angles you have on your roof. A skill saw can be used with a metal cutting blade. This gets really loud. You should use ear protection for yourself. And maybe some for any close neighbors who come to complain. Other options are electric metal shears or nibblers. If you don't want to purchase these expensive items, they can be rented. Plan your cutting well in advance to avoid paying long term rental fees that could equal a purchase price.

If you are able to lay your metal roof on your existing shingle roof, you don't need to worry about light rain. Other weather conditions could cause problems. Your finished roof should withstand any wind conditions, but any panels that are not completely screwed down (which may be required to slide a panel under an edge) are vulnerable. Always complete your screw placement of the last panel before you quit for the day, even if that means pulling some screws back out the next day.

If you have the time, capability and the tools, installing your own roof can be a rewarding activity, in terms of both money and personal satisfaction.

Homemade Solar Panels Made Easy

!±8± Homemade Solar Panels Made Easy

The solar panels at home is not as difficult as you might imagine. In short, a solar panel, a weatherproof box with a top light, solar cells welded together in a configuration that provides the desired output voltage of houses.

I am an electrical contractor in northern MN a few years already and I can not see solar panels installed for every year! Even here, where I swear that only when the sun was below the 20Zero! Well, maybe I exaggerate a little, 'but my point is that solar energy is more than just a hobby or an expensive experiment.

It is still very expensive, have a contractor come and install a complete solar panel and tie it to your home electric bill eliminates the power completely. (Approximately $ 30,000 to start)

This does not mean that we can not use a little ingenuity and a solar power system to us for a fraction of the cost! The first andimportant part of a solar system is the solar collector, of course.

So, once again, that our home-made solar panels, usually is. Simple and inexpensive to make durable wooden case you do not need a special wood for us are the coating with a UV inhibitor and protective sealant over the battlefield. We are also the joints with silicone to protect against moisture.

The tip should be clear evidence of UV-Plexiglas, to keep the sun from turning color. Thethe transparent Plexiglas that our solar system more efficient!

Now we have the courage of the jury, the solar cells receive. The solar cells have an upside and a downside. We are welding in order to combine the positive to negative from positive to negative and so on ... with so-called "wire Tab". Tab Wire is a wire that is flattened, a little 'like a piece of metal tape. You could wire set, but the card makes wire set only the cellsmuch more beautiful, because the card wire from the rear of the cells are on the front of the cells.

Most of the time that we try to obtain a usable output voltage of 12 volts. Since the solar cells to produce not 100% we connect enough cells in series (+ to -) to generate a maximum of 16 volts. This lasts for 32 cells, each of which is 0.5 volts. Ultimately, the choice of the number of cells that you want to use for each module, but if you're going, connect multiple panels together, then you arewant to keep all the same output voltage.

This information should give you the security you need to go further with the next steps for more in-depth step by step instructions if you need it. (It really helped to follow graphics and video!) And sneak up to the start of their materials homemade solar panels.

Temperature-controlled cable runs straight along pipe and valves, held in place by application tape and plugs into grounded electrical outlet. Keeps water flowing down to -380. For odd lengths of pipe over 3/4-inch in diameter, we recommend two separate cables on opposite sides of the pipe with up to 3-feet of overrun at center of pipe run. Metal pipe requires 1/2-inch fiberglass insulation around cable. For plastic pipe, its recommended wrapping pipe with aluminum foil before cable installation. The traditional resistance cable produces a fixed amount of heat based on the electrical line feed. It comes with a built-in thermostat that switches the flow of electricity on and off based on temperature. Cable installs fast and easy. Each package contains grounded plug, built in thermostat and instructions. Cable has weather resistant PVC outer jacket and inner insulation. Keeps water flowing down to 40 F.
